Birthday Girl

BrownStone Nala is Willy's sister. Her owner had planned on a male pup but during the two days she stayed with us, little pink/Nala followed her everywhere. She even kept getting inside the air transport crate. So it was she picked her forever family.

Nala's last trip to the milk bar. McKenzie and Willy say good-bye to Nala.

Sweet Nala with her 8th birthday present. Obviously a keeper.

Christmas Chaos

A tray of no-salt, heavy on the hot, spice bottles; Christmas floral picks; a 9 yard roll of sparkly ribbon; and dumb me for leaving four dogs with cabin fever and one cat alone in the house while doing my volunteer nursing job.

Kitty in the middle of my ornament project area. Soon after the dogs spotted her, everything on the table was tipped or on the floor.
I love to decorate the house for Christmas. This year is heavy on red. For a new fireplace swag I had bought red floral and berry picks, ribbon and balls to adorn greens from the property. Everything was still in bags when I left. I had no reason to expect anyone getting on the counter. That had not happened since Cedar was a puppy - oh-oh - like mother, like daughter. Then again, it could have been Kitty who pushed the bags and spice bottles to the ground for the dogs to have their way with.

I came home to an amazing mess. Fortunately the balls were unbreakable but they were tested for squeakers. The picks became covered with spices, either before or after they were used as tug toys. Now tasty, they had been chewed on but did not stay down. Embellishing the spice coated dogs, rug and floor was the dusting of gold glitter scattered during unrolling and tugging the ribbon. Luckily the tree is wired to the wall.

You Know It's Cold When...

You know it's cold when your fingers stick the the poop scoop handle.
You know it's cold when all the ponds freeze over. One of my little joys in life is skidding pebbles along the frozen surface of the large pond. The tinkling, chiga-chiga-ching sound always delights me. It changes pitch depending upon the thickness of the ice and the depth of the water. This ice has a very high pitch sound - except when Koyuk tried to stand on it. That was just a splosh, high-pitch-yelp. The ice on the deep end, which is in the sun, is not yet thick enough to hold an inquisitive Chinook. The dogs and Kitty also enjoyed the cold novelty.

Koyuk trying to engage Kitty in play.Willy knows better than to chase Kitty or test the ice. Mischievous KoyukYou know it is cold when, four dogs and a cat barely keep you warm at night. We are into the second week of below freezing temperatures. The power went off last night and just came back on. Our two heat pumps died three weeks ago. One was jury rigged to give 60-67 degree heat in the greatroom. It has run constantly to maintain the tepid, down the neck draft. My office has had no heat for three weeks. You know it's cold when four Chinooks crowd the office couch for warmth.

Lisa M

A friend just died. I never saw Lisa not smiling and laughing. Everyone around her had to smile and laugh too. She was like that even when life dealt her some pretty tough times. I am having a hard time dealing with her sudden death and finding the words to say. Words are never enough at a time like this. Lisa bred, raised and trained the world's best mannered and talented Bull Terriers (the dog with the egg shaped head you see on the Target ads). Bullies are banned from many areas, even whole countries. Lisa proved even with their squished, out-of-shape brain they could do wonders. She put the first ever tracking title on a Bully. Her dogs titled in agility, rally-O, obedience and tracking. They showed as national champions in conformation. Lisa leaves behind a husband and four Bullies. Like them, I will really miss her.
