Christmas in Antarctica 2022

Covid isolation seems to have taken the wind out of my sails as far as keeping up with the blog. With only so many pictures I could take of the dogs, I lost interest in posting them.

I had planned a trip to Antartica and Patagonia 2 years ago but, covid cancelled both excursions. Knowing it actually might happen this year, I sacrificed family gatherings and maintained a strict isolation for months. Covid was not going to prevent me from going again.

There is absolutely nothing like a Nat Geo/Lindblad trip as far as quality and emersion into nature as much as possible. Knowing we would have fun, knowledgeable scientists on board and, every possible attempt for us to personally experience the environment we were traveling through, I was as excited to see the Patagonia Fiords, as much as, Antarctica.

I packed for a cold adventure but fortunately did a last minute weather forecast check. I left Eugene with snow on the ground and below freezing temps only to emerge from the plane in Panama City and then Santiago, Chile in 90 degree weather. A last minute tee thrown in was well worn during my 4 days total in the heat.

The only sign of Christmas we saw while in Santiago.
While waiting for all passengers to make it to Santiago, we did a city tour including a visit to the pre-Columbian museum. These 9-12' tall statues were/still are revered as intermediaries between the living and the other world. To preserve the weavings, the lighting in the museum were too low to take pictures of other artifacts.

Our tour included a wetlands with Black Neck swans and Flamingos.

The day ended with feasting and celebration. Our flight to Punta Arenas and our ship the Resolution left early the next morning.
