day two puppy colors against white
Yesterday proved to be too busy to get anything posted but I did get pictures. Since it was sunny outside, Dave and I took the pups out to the warm hot tub cover for a photo op. Cedar was very concerned about what was happening. Her paws are in the first picture where she was trying to get on top of the hot tub to make sure her pups were safe. The wet in the second picture is where she was licking the pups. A couple photos later and everyone was stashed back into the warming box and rushed back inside to the whelping box for another trip to the milk bar.
If you counted pups, you probably noticed that one is missing. Little Nikolai passed away at 0530. He was just way too premature to withstand life outside the womb. Little Galena was put back into the NICU box yesterday afternoon. She had nursed for a few hours but could not hold her own against her much larger siblings. She spent the afternoon and night in the warming box with oxygen and every 1 to 2 hour tube feedings. Last evening, I also supplemented all of the other pups with one or two tube feedings depending on weigh loss. This morning the larger pups are all a lot more vigorous and taking naps between feeding off Cedar.
I have received a lot of wonderful advice and support on the care and feeding of these little ones and the loss of Nikolai. I even talked to Hurricane Chinooks' Joyce Maley, who lives in NC, when it was 11:30 pm here on the pacific coast. She was waiting up for my call. Chinook people are the best.
